🌴 Best time to visit: St. George Island is beautiful year-round! Spring and fall typically offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds, while summer is perfect for beach days and family vacations.

Hurricane season runs June through November, and afternoon rain showers are common during the warmer months—but they usually pass quickly, and the weather can change throughout the day.

Compared to other beach towns, St. George Island feels much slower and less crowded. There are no high-rise hotels or overly commercial areas, which makes it feel like one of those places where you can actually breathe.

You can spend the day on the beach, then drive over to Apalachicola for dinner, shopping, or drinks. It’s the perfect destination for families, couples, and anyone who wants something relaxed and coastal without the crowds.

Start With a Slow Beach Day at St. George Island State Park

You can truly spend all day enjoying the undeveloped coast. Walk along the shoreline, swim, hunt for shells, read a good book — you name it. There’s no need to rush here, and trust me, you won’t ever want to leave!

Climb the Cape St. George Lighthouse

The Cape St. George Lighthouse is a must-see when visiting the island! If you love a little adventure, climbing the lighthouse is such a fun activity between the beach and dinner. The view from the top is honestly breathtaking. There’s nothing quite like seeing the beauty of the island from above!

Golf Carts, Bikes & Paddleboards

There are so many things to do in St. George Island beyond sitting on the beach (although there’s nothing wrong with that!). Renting a golf cart or bikes is a great way to explore the island. Boat Tours, Fishing Charters & Water Adventures

For a more adventurous day, booking a boat charter is the way to go. You can island hop, take an eco tour, plan a sunset outing, or visit Dog Island if you want something a little different from a regular beach day. Dog Island is east of St. George Island and has that quiet, untouched feel that makes it perfect for shelling, fishing, and wildlife watching.

If fishing is more your thing, book Nichols Charters or Shell Yeah Charters for a trip on the water. You can also fish from the St. George Island fishing pier if you want something easy without booking a full charter!

Spend an Afternoon in Apalachicola

Just a short drive over the bridge is the historic town of Apalachicola. It was established in 1831 and has such a rich maritime history, so it feels like the perfect mix of coastal, historic, and quirky in the best way.

Spend the afternoon walking around downtown, popping into antique shops, art galleries, and local boutiques. And you have to stop into Becasa. They have the most beautiful high-quality coastal pieces, and it fits the whole Apalachicola vibe so well.

Learn About Sea Turtles and Local Wildlife

If you’re visiting with kids, or just want an easy little day trip, check out the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve in Eastpoint, the Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center in Port St. Joe, or Gulf Specimen Marine Lab in Panacea. They’re great options if you want to learn more about the wildlife, water, and ecosystems that make this area so special.

Best Coffee and Breakfast Spots

The best way to start your morning on the island is with coffee in hand and absolutely no rush. Here are a few spots to check out before heading to the beach:

Weber’s Little Donut Shop: a must for donuts, but go early before they sell out!

Best Casual Restaurants

The best restaurants are the ones a local can vouch for! I don’t mess around with good food, so here are my favorites for a casual bite to eat: 

Paddy’s Raw Bar: casual seafood, drinks, and local energy
The Sand Bar Kitchen + Tavern: seafood and Southern favorites
Blue Parrot Oceanfront Cafe: beach views, seafood, steaks, and cocktails
BJ’s Pizza & Subs: easy pizza night
Piggly Wiggly Express: grab-and-go sushi when you come onto the island (trust me here!)
Aunt Ebby’s Ice Cream: a must for ice cream after dinner! Even if their line looks insanely long – it’s SO FAST!

Hotels and Inns

Hotels in St. George Island, Florida are limited, which is part of the charm. This isn’t a big resort town, so most places to stay are smaller inns, beachfront hotels, or nearby historic stays.

St. George Inn is a vintage-style inn right on the island, just steps from the beach, lighthouse, restaurants, and shops.

Buccaneer Inn is the only beachfront hotel on St. George Island, making it a great option if you want easy beach access without booking a full vacation rental.

The Gibson Inn is located in Apalachicola, but it’s perfect if you want a historic stay with wraparound porches, unique rooms, Southern charm, and easy access to downtown restaurants and shops.

Vacation Rentals

Vacation rentals are one of the best ways to stay on St. George Island, especially for families, groups, or anyone who wants more space to spread out. You can find beach houses, condos, pet-friendly rentals, homes with pools, and larger properties that make it easy to settle in for the week.

A few places check out are Cape & Coast Premier Properties, Collins Vacation Rentals, GO SGI Vacation Properties, Fickling Vacation Rentals, Airbnb, and Vrbo.

St. George Plantation

St. George Plantation is a great option if you want a more private, secluded experience on the island. It’s a private gated community with beautiful homes, quiet beaches, and its own airport.

Best Areas for Families

For familes, staying directly on St. George Island is easier for beach access, golf cart rides, ice cream runs, and quick trips to the lighthouse. A vacation rental is usually the easiest option if you want more space, a kitchen, and room for everyone to settle in for the week. For a quieter beach experience, St. George Plantation is also a great choice.

Best Areas for Couples

For couples, you’ll love staying on St. George Island for slow mornings, beach walks, and sunset photos by the water. For more restaurants, shops, and date-night options, Apalachicola is a great home base just across the bridge. If you want something more private and secluded, look into St. George Plantation.
