Playful Family Maternity Photos at St. Marks Lighthouse, Florida

There’s something so special about photographing a family through different seasons of life. I always have so much fun with the Gehres family! I photographed their wedding, their family photos, and now their family maternity photos as they get ready to welcome baby number two! We chose St. Marks Lighthouse near Tallahassee, and it was the perfect waterfront spot for a relaxed, playful session with their growing family.

St. Marks Lighthouse is located inside the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, about 25 miles south of Tallahassee, FL. The area overlooks Apalachee Bay and has such a peaceful, coastal feel. Between the historic lighthouse, the water, and all the natural scenery, it’s a beautiful setting for family maternity photos.
I love this spot because it doesn’t need a ton of styling or posing. Kids can wander, play by the water, and actually be themselves, which makes the whole session feel more laid back.

For family maternity photos, especially with toddlers, I love locations that give little ones room to move and play. Instead of asking them to stand still the whole time (because we know they won’t!), we can let them walk along the water, play in the sand, and just be kids.
Those playful moments usually make the best photos because they actually feel like your family. It takes the pressure off everyone needing to pose perfectly. Trust me, if you love candid, natural photos, a place by the water is the way to go.

The best time for maternity photos on the water is during golden hour. In Florida, this is especially important because you can avoid the harsh midday sun and the hottest part of the day. The warm light, softer sky, and sea breeze make everything feel calm. You can’t help but slow down and soak it all in!

For a waterfront maternity session, I always recommend outfits that feel easy, comfortable, and a little coastal. White, linen, cotton, soft neutrals, loose dresses, and flowy cover-ups all look beautiful by the water.
You may be sitting in the sand, stepping in the water, or holding your toddler on your hip, so choose something that still feels beautiful but doesn’t have to stay perfect the entire time. A bikini with a cute cover-up can also be such a fun option if you want something more relaxed and beachy.

If you’re dreaming of family maternity photos that feel candid and natural, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels easy from start to finish. Whether you’re welcoming your first baby or adding another little one to the crew, we can choose a location that lets your family relax, play, and actually have fun together.
