Planning a Wedding in the Bahamas: Everything You Need to Know

Nothing compares to the soft sand and vibrant blue waters of the Bahamas. I’ve captured weddings across the Southeast and many coastal towns, but the Bahamas might have to be my favorite location. Whether you choose an all-inclusive high-end venue or the rooftop of a rental home for an intimate elopement, there are so many options (and islands!) to choose from. Here’s everything you need to know when planning a romantic destination wedding in the Bahamas.

Why Choose the Bahamas for Your Destination Wedding

Why are couples choosing to have a wedding in the Bahamas instead of other countries or coastal spots? Well for starters, the islands here are purely magical! It’s one of those places that leaves you in complete awe and already planning your next visit while your toes are still in the sand. The resorts, excursions, and of course the views speak for themselves. Beyond the wedding activities though, you can snorkel, island hop, take a sunset dinner cruise, or simply do nothing other than relax on the beach with a drink in hand. You’ll probably want to honeymoon here too!

Best Islands for a Wedding in the Bahamas

There are so many islands to choose from, so here are my favorites for a romantic destination wedding in the Bahamas!

Nassau (New Providence)

Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas, making it the most convenient for flights and vendors. If you want a more urban feel with vibrant culture and nightlife, then this might be the island for you!

Paradise Island

Paradise Island connects to Nassau and is home to luxurious resorts and venues. This island is best if you’re looking for all-inclusive wedding packages.

The Exumas

The Exumas is unmatched with its pristine white sand beaches and stunning turquoise waters, perfect if you want a more secluded beach wedding with lots of fun water activities. Plus, you can take a dip with the famous swimming pigs at Pig Beach!

Harbour Island

Harbour Island is known for its pink sand beaches and popular venues, perfect for a chic, high-end destination wedding you’ll never forget.

Eleuthera

Eleuthera is secluded, peaceful, and so picturesque. This spot has the perfect mix of laid-back and elegant wedding options for a day exactly how you envision it.

Legal Requirements for a Destination Wedding in the Bahamas

When it comes to the legal side of things, you’ll need to get a marriage license in the Bahamas. This process includes completing an Application for a Marriage License form, having a valid picture ID, being in the Bahamas at least 24 hours before, and a few other details. You can find everything you need to know about getting a marriage license here.

Another option is to get married legally in the U.S. and have a symbolic, non-legal intimate ceremony or elopement in the Bahamas. Some couples choose to go this route to simplify the process while still having the destination wedding of their dreams. Neither way is “better” – choose whatever feels right for you and your love!

Best Time of Year for a Bahamas Wedding

Next up, let’s plan the best time of year for your Bahamas destination wedding. Hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest risk from August to October. These months are also hotter and more humid. If you plan your wedding during these months, I recommend getting travel insurance just in case.

This leaves late November to early May as the best times for your Bahamas beach wedding! The weather will be sunny and beautiful with the perfect ocean breeze and stunning sunsets.

Hiring a Destination Wedding Photographer for the Bahamas

Let’s make planning a wedding in the Bahamas as stress-free as possible. Your wedding photos are so important for documenting your day for generations to come. That’s why I recommend a photographer (and videographer!) who knows all that goes into a destination wedding and can make your experience as seamless as possible. And in a location like the beach, you’ll want someone who can effortlessly capture every moment no matter the lighting or wind situation.
